My name is Naikara, a 54-year-old female born and raised in the northern region of Kenya to a
nomadic family. Nomadic pastoral communities that live in arid and semi-arid regions like northern Kenya keep migrating in search of water and pasture for human and livestock consumption. I spent my childhood herding my family’s livestock and therefore never had a chance to obtain formal education that comes with diversified employable skills.
At the end of my teenage years, I got initiated into young adulthood and shortly after got marriedoff to a suitor chosen by my family.
The rest of my life has been spent raisingmy children, taking care of my husband, and rearing our livestock.
My community, and family fully depend on livestock as a primary source of livelihood but due to climate change-induced droughts, our economic situation has significantly changed for the
worse. We recently experienced a severe drought that swept away all our livestock
leading to tough economic times. Unfortunately, I lost my husband a few years ago and now rely on very scarce manual jobs in thecommunity to put food on the table.
I am therefore kindly appealing for support from well-wishers in the form of; capacity building on
climate-smart agriculture, livestock restocking, and insurance premiums for the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF). This support will enable my family andI to access; improved food security and nutrition and much-needed healthcare, and
hence improve the quality of my life.
